Colonel Major Amadou Abdramane, the Spokesperson for the Niger Republic Military Junta headed by Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani has announced the former finance and Economy minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine as the country’s new Prime Minister.
The Military Junta’s spokesperson made this known while releasing the list of appointed ministers to serve under the new military government.
It will be recalled that Lamine Zeine served as the Finance and Economy Minister under the president Mamadou Tandja, whose government was also toppled by military coup in 2010. Lamine Zeine will replace Mahamadou Ouhoumoudou who was out of the country when the coup took place.
US SECRETARY OF STATE ISSUED WARNING TO NIGER MILITARY TO RE-INSTATE PRESIDENT MOHAMED BAZOUM
Meanwhile, the U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken has issued a warning to the military Junta to re-instate Bazoum as he declared US’ support to the ECOWAS LEADERS who gave the military junta an ultimatum to re-instate Bazoum or face military intervention. The ultimatum had expired on Sunday 6th August, 2023. ECOWAS heads of state and government are scheduled to meet again on Thursday August 10, 2023 for their decisions.
THREAT OF FORCE: SENATE REJECTS PRESIDENT TINUBU’S REQUEST FOR MILITARY ACTION AGAINST NIGER MILITARY GOVERNMENT
Meanwhile, it will be recalled that against the military intervention threat, the Nigerian Senate has rejected the request of the newly elected chairman of ECOWAS, President Tinubu, for their approval for military campaign in Niger. The senate has advised the federal government to employ diplomatic measures in solving the Niger Republic issue. It will be recalled that the federal government had subsequent to the military take over cut-off electricity supply to the said Niger Republic.
MILITARY DELEGATIONS FROM MALI AND BURKINA FASO PAID NIGER A SOLIDARITY VISIT
In another development, military delegations from the Mali and Burkina Faso’s Military Junta have paid a solidarity visit to Niger Republic. The delegation had arrived the country on Monday 7th August, 2023 even as West African leaders (ECOWAS heads of states and governments) have scheduled a summit for Thursday August 10 to discuss the junta's rejection of an ultimatum to reinstate the ousted president. This meeting will show the new positions of the West African Bloc leaders and their decisions on the Niger Republic military take over.
