  • AS WIKE ISSUES OUT THREAT!

Several people have been confirmed to have been trapped as a high-rising building opposite the Garki Police Station collapsed in the Garki area of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

Reports from the ongoing rescue mission by the men of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and other agencies early hours of Thursday 24th August, 2023 confirmed that up to thirty-seven persons were rescued, while two others were injured as many are still under the collapsed structures whose life status are yet to be ascertained.

According to FEMA Spokesperson person, Nkechi Isa, the residential and partly a commercial building which is located opposite Garki Police Station collapsed in the late hours of Wednesday 23rd August, 2023.

An ongoing rescue mission

"The two-storey building which serves both residential and commercial purposes collapsed on Wednesday night. 37 persons were rescued alive, while 2 others were fatally injured.”

According to the Spokesperson, " A combined team of the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps,(FRSC), FCT Police Command, and the VIO are on the ground to carry out the rescue efforts".

It will be recalled that cases of collapsed building are now recurrent in the country and the phenomenon is becoming common now in the FCT where Standard practice regarding building of structures is to be epitomized. But unfortunately, recent realities are pointing otherwise. Perhaps, these realities are what has prompted the newly appointed Minister of FCT, Nyisom Wike to issue out Warning to those who have built against the laid down master plan of the FCT.
