Governor Peter Mbah at the site of the collapsed bridge in Enugu

The Governor of Enugu State Peter Mbah has declared that the model of road maintenance by the Federal government is not working.

Peter Mbah said this as he visits the site of the collapsed bridge between the New Artisan flyover and the NNPC Mega Station along the Enugu – Port Harcourt Expressway which collapsed on Tuesday 25th October 2023.

However, the Governor was grateful that the said bridge which collapsed after several hours of heavy downpours did not claim any life.

"It is an unfortunate situation, but we are grateful that no life was lost. Obviously, the current model of federal road maintenance is no longer working. If it did, the collapse of the bridge could have been prevented".

He therefore called on the Federal government to concede federal roads within the different states to the respective state governments.

"I call on the federal government to consider the concession of all federal roads in the states to the state governments for proper maintenance in conjunction with the private sector."

He then appealed to the people of Enugu and motorists to use alternative inner city routes to their destinations, while the relevant authorities carry out the needed repairs.
