The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, his Excellency, pastor Umo Eno has declared that the Culprit in the viral video seen abusing his wife, Barrister Ekere Ebong has been reportedly arrested by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.
This was contained in the press release statements on Monday 18th December, 2023 by the Governor of Akwa Ibom State. Pastor Umo Eno. In the statement, signed by the Chief Press Secretary, Ekerete Udoh the Governor condemned the act.
"His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, Governor, Akwa Ibom State, has seen the video currently circulating on the social media platforms of a despicable act of violence and spousal abuse inflicted by a certain Ekere Ebong on his wife.
"The Government and people of Akwa Ibom State, condemn this grave act of gender-based violence in the strongest possible term. Government will assist the lady who was so dehumanized by a man who otherwise should be the one to protect her and ensure that justice is served in line with the provisions of the law against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The Governor according to the statement registered his happiness the arrest of the culprit.
"It is heartwarming to note that, an order for the arrest of the culprit given last night, has been successfully executed. Mr. Ebong, was arrested this morning and is currently in custody of the Police and would be charged to court soon. Government has zero-tolerance for gender-based violence and indeed any other form of violence.
Confirming the arrest in a statement, the Akwa Ibom Police Command through the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Odiko MacDon, said the Command has arrested a lawyer, Ekere Sunday Ebong, after a viral video showed him physically abusing his wife.
MacDon said the suspect was arrested based on the directive of the state Commissioner of Police, Olatoye Durosinmi.
The statement read, “The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested one Barrister Ekere Sunday Ebong (55 years) of Plot 40 L Line Ewet Housing Estate.
“In a video that went viral, the suspect assaulted his wife and dehumanised her, leading to various grievous injuries.
The Governor also called "The Nigerian Bar Association, ( NBA) to also institute disciplinary measures to punish Mr. Ebong, whose conduct, as a lawyer, is against the values and ethics of the noble profession.
He concluded by assuring the public that, "Mr. Ebong’s outrageous and egregious display of violence is totally alien to our culture and he will face the full wrath of the law.
