In this concluding part of the interview with the Fuji Maestro, Segun Opontisun who was accompanied by renown Artist Media and Publicity Manager, Quadri Rasheed Atanda to this interview with our Entertainment Columnist and Correspondent, Abiodun Adeyanju provides insight into his fuji music journey so far,from the time he decided to take up fuji music as a career till this moment.

Segun Opontisun, it has been quite a while since you joined the fuji music genre, in a nutshell, how would you describe your fuji music experience so far?

Sincerely speaking, it has not been a one way traffic or straightway issue since I became a fuji musician, I have been harassed and beaten at music performance venues, security agents have molested me in the process of trying to pay homage to fuji musicians that are ahead of me in the profession at music performance venue, I have been deprived of basic needs while on music tour, having to use impure water and not having access to soap for bath, so I had to compromise my personal hygiene because I was not aware adequate provision was not made by our hosts for the event we were to perform in;however, I have no regret when I remember those experiences as fuji music has rewarded me financially and brought me to the limelight.

From your narration, you have obviously confronted hurdles in building your fuji music career to the present level of success you have achieved, so, what have been the beneficial impact of your fuji music career on your life?

I must confess that the beneficial impact of my fuji music career on my life cannot be overemphasized nor underestimated.As a fuji musician, I have been able to keep my music band intact without break up,this has helped me improve my leadership and managerial abilities through leading my band members.In addition,fuji music has consistently generated sustainable income for me as means of livelihood, I got married and raised two children as a fuji musician, I bought my car and ventured into operating a farm all from proceeds of my fuji music career, fuji music has made me a cynosure of all eyes, well known and provided me opportunities to meet movers and shakers of our society. In all, I have never regretted being a fuji musician.

Can you shed light on your fuji music albums or singles and their impact.

My first fuji music album was in 2003,titled Chop Up, after the release, I became the rave of the moment, likewise did my album Reinforcement which had Pasuma Wonder, Atorise and other musicians supporting the launching at LTV 8, aside that the tribute to Late Gbenga Adeboye in which I featured as the first musician to sing in that collaboration which had Tope Alabi and others,also successful was my album,New Generation and others.

Quite impressive, from your submission of having been in collaboration with other musicians to honour late Gbenga Adeboye, are there other music collaborations you have been involved?

I have been involved in several music collaborations with the likes of Late Sunny T Adesokan omo nna ti o nko fuji, may his soul rest in perfect peace, Pasuma Alabi Wonder, I will soon be having another fuji music collaboration with Pasuma this year,expect another fuji music collaboration I will be having with Sule Adio Atawewe, lest I forget, I also had music collaborations with Segun Oyanna, Segun Alade Oloto and a group of Ghanaian musicians that came to Nigeria to produce a jingle,I was called upon to handle the fuji music inclusion in the jingle.

Given your experience, exposure and competence in fuji music genre, what advice do you have for youths out there who desire to become fuji musicians.

First and foremost, they must possess passion,perseverance and patience, and be ready to sacrifice, they should be humble and ready to learn. Using myself as an example, there was a time I crisscrossed Lagos for regular gigs at Ojuelegba underbridge, Chicago in Mushin, Motife hotel, Agege, Ikeja and I still hold regular gigs aside being invited to events and celebrations, I always ensure I am active to remain relevance, therefore anyone who wants to become a fuji musician should be prepared to work hard and work smart, above all, they should fear God and be dedicated to God,while asking God to bless their music efforts,they should also be mindful of their public image and display good character with impressive attitude as much as they can.
