- CHARGES RELIGIOUS LEADERS TO REFOCUS THEIR PREACHINGS FROM PROSPERITY TO MORALS
The Executive chairman of Ifako-Ijaiye of Ifako-Ijaiye local government area in Lagos State, Honourable Prince Uzman Akanbi Hamzat has declared that it is better to make efforts towards preventing the menace of drug abuse that is scourging our society than trying to set up rehabilitations centers for those who are already consumed by the scourge.
The Chairman said this while answering questions at the event commemorating the 2023 international youth day organized by Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) held in the local government secretariat on Tuesday 15th August, 2023.
The program themed “The Roles of Youths in Combating Cultism, Drug abuse and other Vices in our Community” is aimed at bringing the organisation’s campaign against drug abuse and cultism to the local government.
On the need to setup rehabilitations in his local government as his support to the fight against drug abuse menace, the chairman though promised his support in this regards, but firmly maintained that preventing the menace is better than setting up rehabilitation centers.
To achieve this, he charged religious leaders who base all their preaching and prayers on prosperity to refocus them on morals and good deeds.
“Religious institutions should tell the people to do good. Telling them in the Churches and in the Mosques, that it is important for them to always do the right thing”.
The reason for calling unto religious institutions according to the chairman is that “citizens listen to their pastors and Imams than the politicians, than the government”.
Another solution for drug abuse scourge according to the chairman is parental care and attention. He therefore admonished all to pay attention to their wards and give them adequate care as well as training.
Thereafter, Honourable Hamzat was presented with Chief Community Crime Fighter Award as part of the Community Crime Fighters Merit Award in the course of the program. While he also presented awards to other awardees on behalf of the organisers of the program.
