EMEFIELE IN FRESH TROUBLE AS DSS WITHDRAWS FORMER CHARGES AND SLAMS HIM NEW ONES

The waves of troubles seem not to be over yet for the embattled former Nigerian apex bank governor, Godwin Emefiele as the Department of State Service shows signs they are not ready to let him off their hook yet as he has been slammed with new set of charges as while withdrawing the former charges.

It will be recalled that it was reported here on 25th July, 2023 that a federal high court in Ikoyi has granted Emefiele bail, and the tussle between DSS and Prison officials on who should take custody of the embattled former CBN governor was also reported here.  The DSS had prevailed and whisked Emefiele away.

In a new development, the DSS has approached the Ikoyi Federal High Court to move for an application to withdraw the previous charges against the embattled former CBN governor.  According to the Director of Public Prosecution in his application in the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mohammed Abubakar, “the withdrawal is due to fresh charges filed in an Abuja Federal High Court”.

The initial prosecution was based on charges bordering on unlawful possession of firearms, while the new charges which is a 20-count is yet to be disclosed by the prosecution head citing section 108 of the administration of criminal justice.

According to him, the fresh charges are due to the emerging facts that require further investigation.

“We are dropping the charges because of emerging facts that require further investigations”.

On the presumed intentional attempt by the DSS and FG to hold Emefiele when he has been discharged on bail, the Director of Public Prosecutor claimed “prosecution not in any disobedient to lawful court order”. According to him, there are administrative protocols for handling over a detainee from one agency to the other”.
